Pimlico is an area of Central London in the City of Westminster, built as a southern extension to neighbouring Belgravia. It is known for its garden squares and Regency architecture. It is demarcated to the north by Victoria Station, and bounded by the River Thames to the south, Vauxhall Bridge Road to the east and the former Grosvenor Canal to the west. At its heart is a grid of residential streets laid down by the planner Thomas Cubitt, beginning in 1825 and now protected as the Pimlico Conservation Area. Additions have included the pre-World War II Dolphin Square and the Churchill Gardens and Lillington and Longmoore Gardens estates, now conservation areas in their own right. The area has over 350 Grade II listed buildings and several Grade II* listed churches.

Local bars, restaurants and deli’s in Pimlico offer a wide range of choice to suit every price range and taste. Cultural activities can be found at The Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Westminster Cathedral and the Tate Gallery. There are a number of gyms, including the exclusive Dolphin Square, along with the outside spaces of three garden squares and the River Thames.

The area has fantastic transport facilities, with the Train and Coach Station at Victoria as well as Pimlico Tube Station. There is a wide range of dentists, doctors and opticians, an animal hospital and the private Lister Hospital, providing all the services required by local residents.

The section of London’s skyline that is set to change the most over the coming years is the scrubby industrial no man’s land by the river between Vauxhall and Battersea Power Station. These enormous twin towers will be at the heart of the development – alongside the new pedestrian and cycle bridge proposed between Nine Elms and Pimlico. As well as almost 500 luxury flats, One Nine Elms also house a five-star hotel and a fiftieth-floor viewing lounge. The area hasn’t been nicknamed ‘Dubai-on-Thames’ for nothing.

Not many people know about Pimlico but its close proximity to the Tate Modern and Buckingham Palace and easy commute into the heart of London make it an ideal place to set up home. Escape the chaos of the city and take a stroll through this leafy pocket of London.
