Watch the video filmed for Samsung in Berlin, where Jury members for Dezeen and Samsung’s Ambient Mode design competition explain why they awarded top prize.

Gerard Puxhe created a design called Architectural Extension, which creates the illusion of an extension of the room the television is placed in, which the user can customise in different ways.

The winner was selected by a jury comprising designers Neville Brody and Erwan Bouroullec, Dontae Lee, head of the design centre at Samsung Electronics, and Dezeen’s editorial director Amy Frearson.

The €29,500 competition asked entrants to create a visual experience that displays when the TV is not in use. The shortlisted designers responded with the likes of a virtual architectural extension, a window to other parts of the world and a personal assistant that brings in data from the user’s life.

Samsung was looking for concepts to highlight how this new feature can echo the environment and blend into the aesthetic of people’s homes. The brand wanted entrants to have a particular lifestyle in mind when creating their design.

Judging took place at electronics trade show IFA in Berlin, which took place from 31 August to 5 September 2018, with the winner announced on 3 September 2018 on Dezeen.
